Bookish Wonders #2

This second post in my Bookish Wonders series is all about book nerd jewellery. After finding a picture of the Library Necklace on the Book Riot website I fell in love. But after a feverish hunt of the interweb I was left heart broken. At $340 (£215) these are well out of my price range. But fear not I have found some super cute and a lot more affordable bookish jewellery for you to browse!

I have officially fallen in love Library Necklace. Can I borrow $340 off someone please?!

These mini bookshelves are made to order and super cute! And at on £25 a pop I think they are a bargain!

I found these little beauties on Etsy for just £12.50! This Three Book Necklace is adorable.

Of all the jewellery I have found, I think these have to be my favourite! These Book Earrings are right up my street - LOVE! And at only £8.37 I think you can expect to see me modelling a pair of these very soon. 

Fully functional Mini Leather Journal Necklace OMG! And only £15.82?!?! How do these people make a profit?

This little home made Hunger Games Necklace from Australia and so cute. But with only 6 left on this ebay store and only £14.07 I fear that these may sell out very soon.

These Harry Potter Book Necklaces are from a seller on ebay and I think  they are perfect for a HP Nerd like me!
Even better they are only £3 each or £21 for the full set!

I have no idea what the quality of these Twilight Book Necklaces is but at £3.50 each I think they are so cool.
Maybe a little too much tho!

The Host by Stephenie Meyer - Book Review

I must confess. I started reading this books with negative preconceptions about its quality. Downloaded on a whim from an Amazon gift card it has been on my list of books that I should read, as it was from the author of the infamous Twilight series. Yet my best friend, Sam Crossley, had warned me this is the only book he hasn't finish. But, me being me it just made me want to read it more! So I pushed it up to the top of my reading pile, with his warning ringing in my ears.

Summary courtesy of Amazon : Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed.

When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind.

Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

On first impressions this science fiction book appeared to have potential for an interesting series of books, never mind just one, but I soon discovered why it often became unfinished. This book is too long. I made a comment on Twitter about how I was struggling and with a comment from my old English teacher I stuck at it and was rewarded in sorts.

This was a pure emotional rollercoaster. In my last post I commented how I am an emotional soul (no pun intended) but this had me in a steady stream of tears falling down my cheeks while finishing the final chapters last night.

The romance this book promised to be was easily the least interesting part. An impossible love triangle and the power of all consuming love… blah blah blah. It was too similar to the Twilight series in this respect, with Wanda hopelessly doomed to be the next Bella. Although the endings are very different the themes of the conclusions are almost identical which left me wanting more, or just something different from Meyer.

Overall this book had the foundations to be something so much more, but I did manage to finish this roller coaster ride of emotions, and I think by the end I began to enjoy it.

Fire Kills!

Reading makes you a better person...

A story published in the Guardian.co.uk today says that those that read fiction have increased empathy.

Participants in a Boston university where given an extract from two of my favourite children's authors - JK Rowling and Stephanie Meyer. They were then tested on a number of scales and results showed that those that read JK Rowling's extract from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone identified themselves with wizards, magic and broomsticks, where those who read Stephanie Meyer's extract from Twilight identified with blood, the undead and fangs!

So for those of you that need more encouragement to read, reading fantasy fiction improves your empathy to what you are reading about - which is a little strange when your are reading about characters that are, well, fictional! However, being more empathetic towards over people can only make you a better person in everyday life, and who doesn't love getting lost in something fantastical!

One of my English Literature teachers in college said he loved reading because it let him understand more about the world he might never get a chance to see, and I couldn't agree more!

So what ever your genre of choice, pick up a book today and make yourself more empathetic.
