What am I currently reading?

Across the Universe by Beth Revis - I am really enjoying this so far, a really unique and though provoking young adult science fiction. Well worth check out!

What did you recently finish reading?

Fifty Shades of Grey by E L James - I read this because everyone was talking about it and not really sure what all the hype is about! You can read my mini review on my Facebook page where I gave it 5/5.

What do you think you will read next?

Dragondrums by Anne McCaffrey - this is the next book in the Dragonriders of Pern series I have on my TBR pile. I love the last book I read Dragonsinger so I have high expectations for this one!

11 Questions from Kelly

1. Where do you keep all of your unread books- together or scattered throughout your shelves?
I actually have them scattered through my shelves. I don't have much room to store books at the moment so I stack them where I can. In an ideal world however I will have a TBR shelf!


2. Do your book selections vary by season?
Not really. I tend to read the same genre all year round.


3. What is your favorite foods?
Chilli Con Carne, Chocolate, Bananas and Marshmallows - but not all together, and not necessarily in that order!


4. Do you read the inside flaps that describe a book before or while reading it?
I will always give them a quick read when I purchase or borrow the book. They I have been known to sometimes read it again when I am part way through the book to see if it measures up!!


5. Any quirky reading habits?

I love to read whenever I can, so when I am eating alone I often read as well. It does lead to some embarrassing food stains on book or trying to eat my Kindle moments when I am so into a story I loose all sense and co-ordination. 

6. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be? And why?
I would go to Canada. I have heard nothing but good things about it from friends, family and books. My favorite author Kelley Armstrong is also Canadian and I would love to meet her if the chance ever arose - I am also a bit apprehensive that it would turn into a situation like "The Fault in Our Stars" so maybe not.... 


7. When did your love of reading begin?

As long as I can remember I have always loved reading, but there is one notable time when it was truelly reinforced. I went to the local library with my favorite teacher from Primary School, I was around 7 years old, and she asked me what book I was looking for. I said anything by Jacquline Wilson. She looked so impressed that I liked books that was a wee bit advanced for my age, that it wasn't a picture book and that I even had a favorite author! From that day on I began to fully accept my love of reading as something not to be ashamed of!

8. What are the best and worst books you have read lately?
Best: Dragon Riders of Pern books - I have fully fallen in love with the whole series.
Worst: A book I can't even remeber the name by Cheri Schmidt - It was an awful Twilight rip off and I couldn't get past the first chapter.


9. Do you have any hobbies outside of reading?
Cooking, walking, mountain biking & singing... badly!


10. Which do you prefer- the beginning or end of a story?
I love re-reading stories most because I pick up all the little clues that the beginning of books give to its outcome. There is something about this recognition that I adore. So the beginnings!


11. What is your fondest book memory?

All the times I have ever had a true book nerdy conversation with anyone. The discovery of someone else who loves books as much as me really makes me happy - and I often look back on them as the thing that cements our relationship!

Book Tag

Apologies for the absence of late. A lot of exciting things have been happening over the last few weeks and along with a lot of uni work for the final push of my degree I haven't had a lot of time for myself. But I am planning to get back into the YouTube videos very soon and may even try my hand at vlogging :D

What magazines do you have in your bathroom/lounge right now?
I am not a big magazine reader, much preferring to read a book at any opportunity. However I often have a Top Gear magazine lying around that belongs to my boyfriend.

What’s the worst book you've ever read?
There are very few books that I hate, and even worse haven't finished. But I particularly despised Fateful by Cheri Smidt. I got is for free of Amazon with high hopes and didn't get past the second chapter, it was like Twilight but worse!

What book seems really popular but you actually hated?
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo . This was just not what I was expecting and found it super difficult to read. But I hope that I will tackle it again soon.

What’s the one book you always recommend to just about everyone?
Bitten by Kelley Armstrong, but it comes with a warning! It will hook you in and you won't be released until you finish the series. So well written and addicting!!

What are your 3 favourite poems?
I have never been the biggest poetry lover. But I do love some of the stuff I studied at school and college. I would recommend to anyone The World's Wife by Carol Ann Duffy - the whole collection is really clever. Simon Armatiage is also good! Sonnet 130 by William Shakespeare is also a gooden!

Where do you usually get your books?
Amazon kindle store and Waterstones thanks for lots of book vouchers from friends and family that know me very well.

Where do you usually read your books?
In bed, at the table whilst eating breakfast/ lunch/ dinner, in the living room whilst other people are eating, on the train, anywhere I can!!

When you were little, did you have any particular reading habits?
Going to the library with my Grandparents or Mum and being able to choose a book to read :)

What’s the last thing you stayed up half the night reading because it was so good you couldn’t put it down?
The The Hunger Games and Catching Fire .

Have you ever “faked” reading a book?
Not really. Maybe when listening in to other peoples conversations of the train I am not really reading :P

Have you ever bought a book just because you liked the cover?
As much as well all say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover we all do it. I was first attracted to the True Blood series because of the cover of the first book!

What was your favourite book when you were a child?
I loved anything by Jacqueline Wilson as a chile, but Harry Potter stole my teen years.

What book changed your life?
I find it difficult to pin down just one book that changed my life. But the book that will always stick with me is one I have not finished - The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, what happened to Hassan in the opening chapters has stuck with me and haunted me since!

What is your favourite passage from a book?
No single passage has stuck with me as much as this quote:

Musing Mondays

Although I have only been away from my bloggy for only a few days, I feel like I am neglecting it! Reading in general has been difficult of late and I felt the need to do this real short tag (a.k.a meme) post to let you guys know I am still alive and what I am up to!


Musing Mondays is a weekly meme hosted by Should Be Reading, this weeks musing is:

Other than working at a job, what is your biggest interruption to reading? What takes you away from your book(s)?

For me, it is university work. I am coming up to finishing my degree in just over a month now and although I am excited about jumping into the world outside of education and getting myself onto the job market, I still have a lot of work to do to get there! As I type this blog, I have an essay open and in much need of finishing off. I have loved university, I have been lucky enough to find a course that has been small but perfectly formed and jammed packed full of interesting units. However alongside a mounting to do list of assignments, a dissertation and a shed load of reading, my fictional reading can sometimes be left out.

My boyfriend is also often a distraction. Although we don't live far apart at all, conflicting working schedules mean we don't get to see each other very much. And although he is very understanding of my reading habits, nothing gives him the hump more than me jumping into bed early just to whip my Kindle out and pretty much ignore him.

Finally it is blogging. Someone once said to me if I spent just half the time I spend reading and writing about books I like reading, I could get an awful lot more of them read! But to me part of the joy of reading is talking about and sharing how you interpreted them, and I wouldn't give it up for all the reading time in the world.

Despite all this, every night I will read (even if some nights it is just 10 minutes) and have been known to wake up an hour early to fit in a couple of chapters. Just this morning I was awake at 8am just to set my alarm for 9am and climb back into bed with a cuppa and my Kindle, bliss :)

Friday Finds

This post is inspired from Should Be Reading's blog on all the books you have found this week, but I am going to do this post every couple of weeks to let you guys know some of the great books I have found or been recommended.

After a nice lunch with my fellow book worms Sam Crossley & Ross Phillips I came back with 11 books to read, and my list has been building over the last couple of weeks so I will jump into my new Friday Finds!

The First Chronicle of Pern: Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey 

(and the another 9 books from the series). Lent to me by Mr Ross Phillips I ditched all other reading a picked up this book on Tuesday evening and have been storming through it. A lot more difficult to read than some of the YA I have been reading of late, but this has a fantastic style and I am really getting in to it!

One Day by David Nicholls 

Lent to me by Mr Sam Crossley, he has been banging on about this book for months. I have very little knowledge about it, with only what I can gain from the romantic comedy style comments on the back. But Sam has very good taste in books so I will have to trust him!

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green 

I had heard about this book in numerous places, and finally decided I needed to find out just why it is so popular. With nearly all 5 star reviews on Goodreads it felt this a challenge I needed to read. I have borrowed this from my younger brother's girlfriend so will be tackling this book soon, and lets hope it lives up to all the hype!

Dark Kiss by Michelle Rowan 

First of all I must bask in the beauty that is this books cover. I had seen it on a number of blogs, but after   seeing it on Paper Book Princess I gave in and added to the TBP (to be purchased) list, as it is not even released yet! The teenage YA theme holds promises of a different sort of romance with vampire, angel and demonic themes that send me in an almost frenzy!

Across the Universe by Beth Revis 

This is another beautiful cover, and a science fiction narrative that sounds right up my street. I first heard about this from Grazing Pages (who I have huge book worm respect for and has given me a number of book suggestions from her YouTube videos and blog posts) and added it straight to the TBP pile. I wish I had a glitch in my bank account that it didn't charge me for my Amazon purchases, because this would be the first one I would purchase if money was no object!

A Game of Thrones (complete collection so far) by George R.R.Martin

After watching the first few episodes with Sam of this series I am really enjoying it. But these are BIG books, it would take me weeks to trawl through these - maybe one day I will tackle them, but atm I am content with watching the TV series.
